The Trump Pushback

NORTH OF LOS ANGELES--I was looking for the residents at an address, and no one was home. So per census office direction, I’m to ask all nearby neighbors if they can account for who lives at that address. Apparently the address I needed was occupied by Hispanics.

I asked a man (white, male, mid-50s) coming home from the grocery store if he could tell me who lived at the address behind me. He said in a very stern, demeaning tone, “Depends, does the census have a citizenship question this year?”

“No,” I said. “But it does have a question about racists. Thanks.'' And I kept walking. He just went inside.

I could honestly say the majority of respondents, by far, were Trump supporters. I’d have no idea if it wasn’t an election year, but when you come to a house with Trump signs on it, you can expect pushback. It was almost an insider joke among the enumerators in my group and in the groups on Facebook.

“None of the government's damn business!” Or “I’ve never filled it out, and never will.”

One guy who lives near me saw me and said, “Not today, bud. I’m not participating in that." His Trump flag went up a couple months later.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.--I had a guy who refused repeatedly because there was no citizenship question in the census.

I finally told him they were just going to keep sending me back and it was at the point where I’d be asking his neighbors about his household. He finally said “2 adults” and slammed the door in my face.
